Military Engineer Services (MES) is one of the largest Government construction agencies in India and provides works cover to Army, Navy and Air Force. It has a large number of units and sub units spread across the entire country. MES functions under the Engineer-in-Chief who is assisted by six Command Chief Engineers who are co-located under the operational Army Commands, Additional Director Generals at Pune and Secunderabad. Zonal Chief Engineers of 31 MES zones also assist the Engineer-in-Chief.
MES provides works cover in 450 stations across the country in peace areas as well as in forward areas. It is the premier engineering arm of the Ministry of Defence which, apart from the works services to the three Defence Services, also undertake civil works of Defence Research and Development Organization, Coast Guard, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghathan and other government organizations.
Engineer-in-Chief has also the role of adviser to the Ministry of Defence and the three Services on construction engineering. MES executes work under the supervision of officers and staff consisting of both civilians as well as combatants from the Corps of Engineers. It has an integral multi-disciplinary team of architects, civil, electrical and mechanical engineers, structural designers, quality surveyors and contract specialists for planning, designing and supervising the works.
MES has specialized in wide spectrum of civil works, ranging from conventional buildings and factories to sophisticated complex laboratories, marine works, jetties, dockyards, wharves, workshops, slipways, airfields, roads, blast pens, etc. It also provides sophisticated infrastructural services like air-conditioning, cold storage, water supply, compressed air, sewage treatment plants, lights, cranes, etc. for the Defence Services.
