PV+Solar India Expo 2011

The Government of India has ambitious plans for the development of PV and Solar industry and recently established the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission for this purpose. Currently, the estimated capacity in India is about 400 MW for cells and about 1,000 MW for modules. The capacity of PV cells and modules in the country is expected to cross 750 and 1250 MW by the end of 2011. The Solar Mission plans to create an enabling policy framework for the deployment of 20,000 MW of solar power by 2022 by ramping up capacity of grid-connected solar power generation to 1,000 MW by 2013; an additional 3,000 MW by 2017 through the mandatory use of the renewable purchase obligation by utilities backed with a preferential tariff. This capacity is expected to be more than doubled – reaching 10,000 MW installed power by 2017 or more, based on the enhanced and enabled international finance and technology transfer. The Government plans to promote programmes for off-grid applications, reaching 1,000 MW by 2017 and 2,000MW by 2022.
