National Campaign on Energy Conservation 2007

Introduction:

 

Energy is the prime mover of economic development of a country. For India, the energy sector assumes a critical importance in view of the increasing energy needs, the huge investments required to meet them, and the potential balance of payments and environmental concerns associated with their supply. Consequently, it is essential to enhance the energy efficiency of the Indian economy so as to decouple the economic growth from energy growth.

 

 In order to institutionalize energy conservation efforts in the country, the parliament passed the Energy Conservation Act in 2001, and established the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to promote the efficient use of energy and its conservation. The BEE has initiated action to enhance energy efficiency through a range of measures, including the development of a draft Energy Conservation  Building Code for large, new commercial buildings; the launch of energy labeling scheme for appliances; the initiation of a process for the development of energy consumption norms for industrial sub sectors; and an annual examination to certify energy auditors and energy mangers. However, the effectiveness of this and other measures ultimately depends on their adoption by all energy users-and consequently on their awareness of the energy savings opportunities around  them.

 

The National campaign on Energy Conservation focuses on this awareness creation, which can significantly reduce the need for additions of new energy supply system in coming years. The campaign\'s objective is to reach out to as many people as possible since energy conservation is an activity to which all the energy consumers in the country can contribute; whether households or factories, small shops or large commercial buildings, farmers or office workers. The campaign includes initiatives that will address use of energy in industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors, as well as households and educational institutions. The objective of the campaign is to reduce energy cost by reducing demand for electricity, as well as increasing efficiency of electricity generation.

 

The campaign focuses on the creation of consumer awareness and understating of the necessity and significance of the energy conservation. The campaign will urge all energy consumers to be part of the energy conservation efforts by optimizing the use of energy and making a habit of energy saving. The campaign will also involve distinguished personalities and reputed organizations as role models.
