NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON Biotechnology and the Environment-(NCBE 2010)

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, India (formerly RegionalEngineering College, Durgapur), was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as one of the eight such colleges aimed to function as a pace setter for engineering education in the country and to foster national integration. It is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution of the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The Institute is located about 160 km north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi Main Railway-Route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2 (the Grand Trunk Road). NIT Durgapur can also be reached by air to Netaji Subhash Chandra BoseInternational Airport, Kolkata and then on to Durgapur either by rail or by road by the above routes. The Institute spreads over an area of 187 acres of land. It is fully residential and co-educational. At present students reside in seven boys' hostels and two girls' hostels.

Conference Theme

One of the primary concerns of present day humankind is the environment. Rapid industrialization and development are increasingly posing a danger to the environment. This would lead to a point where human endeavour would ultimately become unsustainable. Fortunately, the world has begun to realize the importance of the environment in sustainable development.

The aim of the conference is to create awareness in young minds about the importance of the environment and the developments being made with regard to protection of the environment. Specifically, the conference will focus on the current research trends and advances in applications of biotechnology in environmental pollution assessment and control and in the development of environment friendly technologies.
