Dimapur, May 7 (MExN): A workshop on Bio-medical Waste Management was held at Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), Conference Hall, and Signal Point Dimapur to sensitize the hazards of bio-medical waste. The Chairman of NPCB A. Rongsenwati Ao, IFS in his keynote address explained that all those healthcare establishments that generate waste as a result of health activities are covered under Bio-medical Waste. “Safe disposal of bio-medical waste is an issue of growing concern as it is one of the sources responsible for causing health hazards either directly or indirectly through contamination of soil, ground water, surface air and water,” he said.
He also said that hospitals and nursing homes in our state conveniently dump the infectious as well as toxic wastes from their establishments into drains or dumped within the premises without being incinerated or disposed off thereby causing a potential threat to human life. He informed that presently improved technology for disposal of such waste is readily available like incinerators, autoclaves, hydroclaves, etc. “Except Army hospitals, not a single hospital or nursing home in Nagaland has installed such facilities,” he said. Resource person for the workshop, Gurung, Assistant Environmental Engineer, CPCB, Zonal Office Shillong meanwhile explained the management and handling rules and implementation of BMW.
He spoke on the treatment and disposal of BMW in a scientific and systematic manner so that adverse effects on human health and environment is reduced. He further explained the categories, and transportation rules of BMW. The workshop was attended by a variety of people from different departments like nursing, pharmaceuticals, dental, veterinary etc. There were also discussions held between the resource persons, members of NPCB and participants of the workshop. The welcome address was given by Aghali A. Swu, Assistant Environmental Engineer, NPCB while vote of thanks stated by Neizeno Peseyie, Scientist ‘B’, NPCB.
