Policy on e-waste management needed

NEW DELHI: Recognising the lack of a well-drafted policy on management of e-waste and the need for an awareness campaign regarding its hazards, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has expressed its concern and might be considering a notification for imposing penalty and punishment against those contributing to e-waste pollution. An awareness programme to inform Delhiites about e-waste and its hazards is also being considered by the civic agency.

According to MCD Works Committee chairman Jagdish Mamgain, city civic agencies are neither prepared for exercising control on the increasing e-waste nor equipped with any effective law.

“E-waste has become a dangerous threat to the health of Delhiites and is contributing to increasing pollution in the Capital. Treatment of e-waste, industrial waste, nuclear waste, surgical waste should be top priority. Presently, e-waste is disposed in landfills and incinerators.”

Any concrete plan or policy for its treatment was presently lacking, Mr.Mamgain said.
