Software-to-soap maker Wipro Ltd plans to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint by half in the next five years. The Bangalore-based company with significant interests in IT, would reduce GHG intensity to 2.5 tonnes per employee by 2015, according to the company’s second sustainability report released recently.

The GHG footprint for the India operations of Wipro’s IT business stands at 4.79 tonnes per employee. Prepared in line with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) framework, the report outlines Wipro’s broad goals for the next few years under various sustainability dimensions. These include energy, green-house gas intensity, water efficiency, waste management, diversity, education and community.

The report also says that during the last five years, Wipro’s energy efficiency improved nearly 19 per cent from 337 Kwh per employee to 274 Kwh per employee. Thirty two per cent of its water requirements are met through a combination of waste water recycling and rain water harvesting. Recently, Wipro implemented various projects for solid waste management and recycling. The company installed a bio-gas plant to recycle food waste at its Electronic City campus in Bangalore. This saves four 19 KG LPG cylinders per day.

Besides, a paper-waste processing plant installed in the Electronic City campus converts paper waste into paper pulp, subsequently converted into notepads.
