New Delhi:
A fake mineral water manufacturing unit in Ghaziabad was busted on Friday. The factory was in operation for the past several years and it was supplying mineral water to various areas in Delhi and NCR, police said. The unit, located in Sahibabad, used to pack the water in used water bottles manufactured by a reputed company and sold them as genuine product.
‘‘The unit had the capacity to process about 2,000 litres of water in 15 minutes. We have seized thousands of used bottles manufactured by the reputed company,’’ said SSP (Ghaziabad) Raghuvir Lal.
Sitaram, owner of the plant and mastermind behind the racket, was arrested. The supplier of used bottles, identified as Rajeev, is absconding.
The plant had a submersible pump that would draw water into a 2,000 litre tank. The water would be then processed to finally produce 1,000 litres of ‘mineral water’. The fake mineral water bottles would then be sold in various NCR areas.
‘‘A commercial electric meter was also found installed in the premises and we are investigating how electricity connection was given to the company that was running without a license. Investigations will reveal if officials of various government departments are involved in the racket. The accused were running the factory openly and had made no attempt to hide their operations,’’ said SSP Lal.
The plant, located near one of the largest printing presses of a leading national daily, also supplied water to the employees of the press who complained that the water tasted foul. The fact that the factory was operating illegally had come to light after the Gurgaon wing of a leading soft drinks company lodged a complaint against the factory.
