In view of reports of the presence of uranium and other heavy metals besides arsenic in canal and underground water that were causing deadly diseases like cancer, the state government has constituted a five-member committee to formulate methods for sampling these water sources.
Principal Secretary, Health, Satish Chandra said here today that the committee comprised the Director, Health Services; Chief Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation; Head of Department of the Community Health Medicine, PGI, Chandigarh; head, Geology Department, Punjab University (Chandigarh); and Head, Physics Department, GND University (Amritsar).
On the basis of sampling of water from canals and underground water, a detailed study will be done to deal with the problem and save people in the state from the adverse effects of uranium and other heavy metals in water.
