Solar energy players launch industry body

To help in policy development, awareness creation, as well as training and capacity building for solar energy is the main focus of Solar Thermal Federation of India (STFI). Subsequent to the launch of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, players who claim to control over 75 per cent of the market have come together to launch STFI, which will not only help expand solar water heating usage, but also promote applications beyond that.

Formally launching the industry body here on Thursday, Mr K. Subramanya, CEO, Tata-BP Solar and Chairman of STFI, said, “Primary on the agenda of STFI is evolving an appropriate policy framework and user-friendly financing mechanism to make this target realisable by working in close coordination with the Ministries of New and Renewable Energy, Power, and Urban Development.” R&D investment Another focus area of STFI would be to enhance the competitiveness of the Indian solar thermal industry through continuous investment in research and development besides market awareness/development, he said.

Priority would also be to take the focus beyond solar water heating in terms of solar thermal applications to expand the market scope and horizons for constituent players, he added. Elaborating on the kind of support the industry would be looking at, Mr Jaideep Malaviya, President of STFI, said, “Some banks are providing finance for buying solar thermal products, but this should be brought under the priority sector lending for all public and private banks.” There are two key priorities before the industry today, he said. One is to create on the benefits of solar water heaters as an affordable, long-lasting and easy to install and maintain option h, he said.
