Low emission zones could be one way in which the UK could tackle toxic air pollution from vehicle greenhouse gas emissions.
This is according to Ed Dearnley, policy officer at Environmental Protection UK.
He said: "What we can do is use low emission zones which restrict access to the most polluted areas of towns and cities to the cleanest vehicles.
"We need to raise public awareness of the problem."
Mr Dearnley's comments follow a report from Volvo, warning of the risks involved in high levels of toxic emissions from vehicles.
Peter Rusk, managing director of Volvo UK, suggested that car manufacturers need to take early action on the issue.
"Even if the economic situation is tight right now, I think that firms and brands need to inform their consumers about toxic emissions in the best way possible," he said.
Government figures estimate that poor air quality is responsible for around 50,000 premature deaths in the UK every year.
