State environmental regulators have issued a $1,800 fine to ITT Night Vision in Roanoke County for improperly storing hazardous waste. About 10 gallons of isopropanol, a flammable solvent, were dumped into a tank at the Plantation Road facility in October 2009, according to a consent order between the company and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
The waste never made its way into the surrounding environment, said Robert Steele, DEQ's regional enforcement coordinator. Once it was determined that ITT lacked a permit to transfer the isopropanol, which came from a second company site on Enon Drive, the waste was shipped to a proper disposal site. ITT took disciplinary action against the staffers involved and gave additional training to all employees who handle hazardous waste, according to the consent order. A spokesman for ITT could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The company manufactures night vision goggles, monocular and related gear, and is a major supplier for the U.S. armed forces. As part of the consent order, the $1,800 fine will be paid after a month long comment period
